The Treasure You Carry
As I was meditating on Ephesians 4:7, what struck me most was the love of God.
Not just His power. Not just His sovereignty. But His intentionality toward each of us.
“But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ.” Ephesians 4:7
Every one of us.
That phrase alone should shift the way many believers see themselves. In a world consumed with comparison, competition, status, and visibility, we have forgotten something deeply important about the heart of God. He has graced, granted, and entrusted every believer with something meaningful.
No believer should feel left out or less than.
Christ has given each and every one of us a gift. He has graced us with something we could never earn and could never repay. We are all valuable, needed, and necessary within the Body of Christ. This verse should bring hope. It should establish value. It should silence the lie that some people matter more to God than others.
The Amplified Bible says that grace was given “not indiscriminately, but in different ways in proportion to the measure of Christ’s rich and abundant gift.” The word measure comes from the Greek word metron, which refers to a measured portion, an assigned extent, or a determined allotment.
In other words, what has been given to you was intentional.
Your grace is not random.
Your gifting is not accidental.
Your portion was measured by Christ Himself.
The MacArthur Study Bible notes that each believer has a unique spiritual gift that God individually portions out according to His sovereign will and design. When I reflected on that, three thoughts immediately came to mind:
This should bring gratitude.
This should reveal value.
This should encourage discovery.
Gratitude because everything we have was given freely by God’s grace. None of us earned what He entrusted to us. Grace has always been unmerited, undeserved, and freely given. The gifts, abilities, burdens, and assignments attached to our lives are not trophies of self achievement. They are evidence of the generosity of Christ.
Value because many believers spend years feeling insignificant while carrying something heaven intentionally placed within them. We often magnify what someone else was given while overlooking what God placed in us. Yet the Body of Christ was never designed for uniformity. It was designed for unity through diversity. Our differences were never meant to create division. They were meant to strengthen the whole.
Matthew Henry wrote that although believers differ in gifts and measures, these differences should never breed division because they all come from the same gracious giver and are designed for the same purpose. That perspective is deeply needed in today’s church culture. We have spent too much time comparing measures instead of stewarding what was personally entrusted to us.
And lastly, discovery.
I believe one of the greatest disservices we have done is not allowing the Holy Spirit to fully be who He is in the lives of believers. Jesus called Him our Counselor, Helper, Intercessor, Advocate, Strengthener, and Standby. Yet many people remain disconnected from the very One sent to help them discover who they are.
The Holy Spirit does not merely comfort us. He reveals us.
He reveals purpose.
He reveals gifting.
He reveals identity.
He reveals capacity.
He reveals calling.
For years I have said that many people spend their lives searching for treasure outside of themselves while ignoring the treasure box they carry within. There are gifts, graces, burdens, wisdom, and callings hidden inside believers that have yet to be uncovered because many have never paused long enough to seek God concerning what He placed within them.
I want to encourage you this week to sit in the seat of gratitude. Reflect on your life and recognize what God has already done and what He has already placed within you. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal more concerning the what, why, and how of your gifting.
You are not empty.
You are not overlooked.
You are not unnecessary.
There is grace on your life.
And what God has placed within you matters.
He’s speaking,
I’m writing and listening
