THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS

A Makeover from the Inside Out — 10 Year Anniversary Edition

Ten years ago, I wrote this book from where I stood at the time. Since then, I’ve walked further, wept more, and let God reach places in me I didn’t even know still needed His touch. This anniversary edition isn’t a reprint. It carries the work He’s still doing in me, and the work He wants to do in you.

Through personal stories, women of the Bible, reflection questions, and practical application, we’ll look beneath what we present to the world and pay attention to what’s happening in our hearts. We’ll name the Spiritual Elephants we may have learned to walk around: labels, comparison, bitterness, hidden pain, the silence we’ve accepted, and more.

Some places need healing. Some choices call for repentance. Some situations call for boundaries, support, or the courage to speak up. We don’t have to mix them up to bring them honestly before God.

Whether you’ve walked with me since the first edition or you’re meeting this message for the first time, there’s room for you here.

An Honest Look Beneath the Surface

You already know how to read your natural skin. You can tell when it’s dry and pulling tight, when oil starts to surface, or when it’s just out of balance. But when was the last time you paused long enough to notice what your heart has been carrying?

Have you been pouring out without letting anyone pour into you? Holding a question you’re afraid to ask? Comparing your life to someone else’s? Looking steady on the outside while feeling tender underneath?

First Peter 3:4 talks about the hidden person of the heart, a beauty that doesn’t fade and is precious in God’s sight. That hidden beauty is your mind, your will, your emotions, and your attitude. In The Beauty of Holiness, I call it your Spiritual Skin.

The Spiritual Skin Consultation is an invitation to slow down and take an honest look. Using the six Spiritual Skin types from the book, these questions can help you notice where you may need nourishment, correction, rest, support, or a wise next step.

Your result is a starting point for prayer and reflection. It isn’t a label, a measure of your faith, or a verdict on your worth.

This is a devotional reflection tool, not a medical or psychological diagnosis, and it isn’t a substitute for medical or mental health care. Share only what you’re comfortable sharing.

A Mirror, Not a Label

When an esthetician holds up the mirror, she isn’t telling you who you are. She’s showing you what’s on the surface today. This consultation works the same way. It can show you what needs attention, but it could never tell the whole story of your life.

You may recognize yourself in more than one Spiritual Skin type. You may feel steady in one relationship and tender in another. You may be growing in confidence while you’re still carrying grief. You don’t have to squeeze yourself into one box.

As you reflect, hold on to these truths:

Your worth isn’t being scored.
A wound someone caused isn’t the same as a choice you made.
Needing support doesn’t make your faith any less real.
Recognizing a concern doesn’t mean you have to share it publicly.
You can be growing and still need care.

Bring what you can honestly bring. Let this be an invitation to pay attention, not one more reason to be hard on yourself.

What Is Your Spiritual Skin Asking You to Notice?

The book explores six Spiritual Skin types: Oily, Dry, Combination, Sensitive, Normal, and Mature. They give us language for reflection. They aren’t six levels of worth, and none of them holds everything there is to know about you.

Your consultation will suggest a place to start. Read it slowly, notice what fits, and ask the Holy Spirit what deserves a closer look.

Your Fifteen-Question Heart Inventory

Answer from the season you’re actually living in, not the version of yourself you think you should present. Each question opens with a familiar natural skin comparison. That first line is just the mirror, and it isn’t scored. You’ll only rate the spiritual question that follows.

There’s no prize for choosing the answer that sounds the most spiritual, so give yourself permission to be honest. If a question touches something tender, pause. You can come back when you’re ready.

QUESTION 1 OF 15 7%
How to answer: The first line is just the mirror, a familiar everyday comparison, and it isn’t scored. Only the second line, the spiritual question, is what you’ll rate from 1 to 5.

A Note from MaShani

Thank you for making room to look beneath the surface.

Some of those questions may have been easy to answer. Others may have touched something you don’t have words for yet. You don’t have to settle all of it today.

As you read your Spiritual Skin reflection below, notice what resonates. Bring it to God. Write about it. If you need support, think about who has earned the trust to walk with you.

Then choose one next step you can actually take.

You don’t have to tell everyone. You don’t have to produce tears. You don’t have to prove you’re ready.

Just start with what’s true.

With love,

What You May Recognize

This reflection is a starting point, not a label or a diagnosis. Only the Holy Spirit truly knows where you are, so take what you see here to Him in prayer.

Tending Your Spiritual Skin

A Strength to Nurture.
An Area to Tend.

One Wise Next Step.
ScoreProfileWhat it Means
15-25Mature SkinYou may recognize growing wisdom, discernment, and the ability to stand with both courage and humility. Maturity doesn’t mean you’re done growing, or that you have to carry everything alone. A mature woman can walk through a dry or tender season too. You can still receive correction, ask for help, and rest without walking away from what matters.
26-35Normal SkinYou may recognize a season of steadiness, with rhythms that are helping you stay grounded. Receive that with gratitude. Steady doesn’t mean nothing can hurt you or that every area is settled. Keep tending the relationships and practices that help you stay honest and connected to God. And remember, “Normal” is a skincare word. It doesn’t mean a woman who’s grieving or struggling is abnormal.
36-45Combination SkinYou may recognize strength in one area of your life and struggle in another. Both can be true. Sometimes the contrast shows up in your own responses. Other times you’re responding wisely, but the pressure around you keeps making different demands. You don’t have to dismiss the concern because other things are going well, and you don’t have to call your whole life broken because one place needs care.
46-55Sensitive SkinYou may recognize a tender place touched by disappointment, comparison, misunderstanding, loss, or harm. Being tender is not the same as being weak. Sensitive skin reacts because something touched it. Be honest about what happened to you, and just as honest about how you’ve been responding. Some of what you’re carrying needs healing. Some of it may need you to own your part. Sometimes it’s both, and God can handle both.
56-65Dry SkinYou may recognize depletion, distance, or the feeling that you don’t have much left to give. Before you assume you just need to try harder, pause and ask what’s been draining you. Grief, demands, isolation, and rhythms that have slipped away may each call for a different kind of care.
66-75Oily SkinYou may recognize attitudes, words, or habits surfacing in ways that need attention. You don’t have to hide them, and you don’t have to make them your identity. Name what’s happening. Where you’ve caused harm, take responsibility. Where a pattern keeps coming back, ask what support could help you respond differently. As you choose Christ and walk in what His Word reveals, He cleanses what has built up.

Stay H.O.T.: Honest, Open, and Transparent

This consultation is a beginning. The H.O.T. Principle gives you a way to keep going.

Honest. Tell God the truth about what happened, what you feel, what you fear, and what you may need to take responsibility for. Being honest doesn’t mean exaggerating, condemning yourself, or pretending harm didn’t happen.
Open. Stay willing to let God deal with what He shows you, and to receive His direction, wise counsel, support, and correction. Being open doesn’t mean giving everybody access to your story.
Transparent. Bring your real thoughts and motives before God and, when it’s safe and wise, before trustworthy people who can walk with you in truth. Transparency isn’t public exposure. You can be truthful and still have boundaries.

When you bring something into the light, secrecy starts to lose its grip. You don’t have to deal with everything at once. Start with the one place that needs your attention.

Your Next Step Doesn’t Have to Be a Big One

You may need to pray honestly. Write the question down. Rest. Ask for help. Apologize. Set a boundary. Talk to someone who has the authority to address a concern.

Different situations call for different responses. Choose one step that fits what you recognized today.
